if you really want to run for a long time, there's some amazing music on the latest loud noises podcast! Loud noises episode 7 by LoudNoises

Nike+ 5th birthday

I found out it was the 5th Birthday of  Nike + yesterday, they had a run at the Nike shop in Prague, I didn't run (should have) But went and took some photos instead. :)

Best running stretches.

I must admit, I'm really lazy about stretching after a run, but I think it's incredibly important. here's a good site with the most essential stretches to be doing after a run. After all we don't want to hurt ourselves do we?

S T R E T C H

Brilliant mix for running!

Thanks to everyone coming yesterday!

A very nice evening's run!
 The usual route

 The grown ups

the baby runners!

We did 2 runs yesterday, first a beginners run alternating between walking and running for half an hour, then afterwards we did the usual 5km, finishing off at the beer garden at Ohrada!

What we learned:

knees are tricky things
too many strawberries are bad
forcing people to run makes you unpopular

well done everyone!

The runner's prayer

From U.S. 50K recordholder Josh Cox

God, grant me the serenity to accept when I cannot run; the courage to run when I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.  ;)

creative running!

Thanks to Jitka!!

Couch to 5k and beyond!

So I'm going to start a little program for beginners who may be interested in running. It's based on the couch to 5k model with some changes. really for absolute beginners.

You can see a similar programme here

We'll be starting on Wednesday at the Krejcarek tram stop at 7pm with 20 minutes of alternate running and walking.

info

Depending on interest we will also run on Saturday at around lunchtime, probably at another location! :)

Come along and try it out!!

Things we learned on the run.

Carrot soup for lunch doesn't help much.
Beer is probably better at the end of the run.
You can buy Thyme flavoured water.

Just me and the snails

Went for a little run this evening, it was a little wet, a bit like running in a cloud. The humidity didn't bother me much, however it must have put a lot of people off because for the most part I was alone, well almost. The rain brought hundreds of snails out, it was really nice to be out there with them, and at least I know I can run faster than them.  I did meet one other runner and we did the usual wave of acknowledgement. I Must remember not to do this when I'm walking and I pass a runner. That would be odd. Running through the tunnel was strange today, at one point i was surrounded by blackness with only a milky pale light in the distance to give me my bearings. At the risk of sounding ridiculous it felt like I was running in space for a while. When I emerged into the daylight and saw the St Vitus cathedral in the distance, shrouded by mist... It was a really special moment. It was a good jog this evening.

the 10 benefits of running.

Apparently there are 10 benefits of running regularly. I'm not going to list them, but you can find them here:

10 reasons to run

Plus it makes it easier to get away from escaped pumas.

beer mile... a perfect race?

The concept is pretty simple... Drink a can of beer, run 400 metres... repeat another 3 times... finish! Great!

amazingly enough, there are official rules:

Beer mile

apparently "Cider will not suffice".

Yet another run! This Saturday (14th May).

If you have facebook here's a fancy way of looking at it:
http://apps.facebook.com/nike_lokality/runs/view/127

It's a nice easy Flat course from the tram stop Krejcarek down to Hlavni Nadrazi and back. It's approximately 5km and runs through an old train tunnel (ooh!) feel free to run half of it and leave it at that, or take a breath and go for the return leg! (Oh and there's a pub halfway along the track too )

come along, or if you are interested in different times or days let me know

Dan

A run on Thursday

Doing an evening run this Thursday ( 12th May) If anyone would like to join... You are all more than welcome!

see you!!

Found an old article on running in prague

It's maybe a bit out of date, but a good starting point for anyone looking for places to run.

EDIT: Also found this page detailing some routes around the city, looks pretty useful and people can add their own if they like.

McMarathon!

!! This is good news for all junk food fans. Mcdonalds can help you train for a marathon! I am a big fan of crappy food and I think the only reason I finished the half marathon in such good shape was because I took a bag of haribos with me. Maybe I could train for a run eating nothing but Yes! Burgers?

Oh and by the way, as it gets warmer remember to hydrate properly, beer is your friend ;)

Rest is Running!

Really really (and I mean really) doesn't apply to me... But if running becomes so compulsive that you are doing it every day... Take care!!

No matter how guilty you feel, a day off is always a good idea (pretty much in all aspects of life)

Why Do You Run?

I run because for those few minutes I feel at least a little bit free.

So the GPS doesn't work very well in my pocket...

I ran from my house in Zelivskeho to Namesti Miru and back... Things I always forget about running this route:

Cars don't stop at crossings
People randomly just start running all over the place
And they weave all over the pavement

Still, i sort of prefer this route to the one that goes through Prague 10 When I'm feeling kinda hectic.

There's no time!

Quick! get out and have a run before it rains!

I must admit on some occasions I went out like a punk

Loudnoises helps runners.

It's a fact.

A few friends and I do a little podcast of indie music every 2 weeks. This week's one is especially good for a run. And there's lots of swearing which makes it cool. Of course.

Run this Sunday?

If you are in Prague and the weather is good and you feel like a run this Sunday (8th May).. It's shortish... just under 5km...

IS IT SAFE?

Not really a film about running in any major way, but what a movie! Classic 70's thriller.

another run!

Shorter distance... pretty much the same time! GAH!

10k run Prague 03/09/2011

Just signed up for a 10k in September. Always feel better when I sign up for something.. it gives me the impetus to actually get out onto the street and jog a bit.

It's cheapish, you can design your own teeshirt and there's a day of musics and stuff happening at Zlute Lasne. I think anyone who even starts running now could do it and the beers afterwards always feel well earned.

For the lazy fat runner in all of us!

When it's raining and you don't want to run at all.

well, the easiest thing would be to stay in and have a cup of tea and forget all about it.. but there's always that nagging voice in the back of your head. Sometimes it gets too much and you just have to man up, grow a pair and get out there. You always feel better afterwards... at least that's what I tell myself. Haha!
I started using this Nike application for recording routes and times and stuff, I'm not exactly sure if I can link the results here but I can do a likkle screenshot. If you have an iphone it's a pretty cool application.. but the gps eats the battery so make sure it's charged enough. Apparently I have challenged myself to 3 runs a week. Hmm... Do I accept the challenge I made to myself?

What I read about When I read about Running.

A few years ago I received the book 'What I talk about when I talk about running' By Haruki Murakami as a birthday present. I have never read anything quite like it in all my life. It's a kind of Diary or journal on what it means to be a long distance runner, but it doesn't linger on diets or muscle groups or stretching techniques... in fact it's a very simple journal about exactly what it feels like to be a runner and what that does to you as a person... it's almost zen in it's minimalism, and it's also pretty thin ;)

Definitely recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in running.

And here's a great quote from it.

"People sometimes sneer at those who run every day, claiming they'll go to any length to live longer. But don't think that's the reason most people run. Most runners run not because they want to live longer, but because they want to live life to the fullest. If you're going to while away the years, it's far better to live them with clear goals and fully alive then in a fog, and I believe running helps you to do that. Exerting yourself to the fullest within your individual limits: that's the essence of running, and a metaphor for life — and for me, for writing as whole. I believe many runners would agree"

The loneliness of the long distance runner

Running films... For inspiration.

Here is a selection of movies about running.. for when we need that little bit of inspiration...

Beginning is always the hardest part.

Inertia is a difficult thing to overcome. Sometimes it's best just to launch into it... Take a jump into the blackness. Once you build up momentum it is not so much about continuing, but about being able to make yourself stop.

One foot in front of the other... Repeat.
